Pond Cleaning

A full pond clean is a simple way to bring your pond back to its former glory without breaking the bank.

A typical pond clean

The pond is firstly drained to a safe level where fish, plants, frogs and other wildlife are carefully removed and kept in aerated holding tanks. The water is pumped either down a drain or suitable area of the garden.

When all fish, frogs etc have been removed, plants and other objects are removed from the pond. Wanted plants are tidied up, excess roots are cut back usually to the pot itself making maintenance easier for the future.

The remaining sludge, green/dirty water can then be vacuumed out or removed manually. Once the pond is sludge free, the sides of the pond are jet washed to remove any loose algae/debris, rinsed and re-vacuumed.

The pond is topped up with treated, de-chlorinated tap water and if needed the necessary bacterial elements can be added. Fish and other wanted wildlife are then acclimatized correctly and re-introduced to the pond. The finished result is a sludge free, crystal clear water and a beautiful clean pond.

We use a variety of size fish holding tanks during a pond clean. Size depends fish size and quantity. Filtered holding tanks are used if fish are held for prolonged periods of time.

Please note: We highly recommend the use of an adequate filtration system and an suitable pump. Ponds which are no't filtered correctly run a higher risk of becoming silted up, green water amd worst of all water quality can deteriorate causing harm to your fish and other wildlife.

Winter pond cleaning

We are regularly asked by new and existing clients whether it is OK to clean your pond in the winter. In fact it is one the best times of year to have this work undertaken.

With cooler water temperatures, the dissolved oxygen levels are high compared to the summer months which levels drop quickly. With these low temperatures your fishes metabolism will be very low which means low harmful waste levels in the pond.

Majority of the neighboring trees will have dropped off most of their leaves, your pond plants will have died back which will sit on the bottom and break down causing silt levels too rise.

Even better (especially for the unfiltered pond) once the pond has been cleaned out, without the warm sunshine present the water will stay clearer for longer.
